About

I came to Manchester in 1993, went home, and came back

I work globally with leaders on communication skills. Many people call these soft skills — I call them critical skills.

I first arrived as an American exchange student, studying European media at the University of Manchester. I went home to finish my degree, then came back for work in 1998 — and built a career here. It’s also where I met my partner.

Nearly thirty years on, I work from two bases: Manchester, UK and Boston, USA — in person in both, and online with leaders around the world.

Education

  • BA, European Communications and Politics — Pennsylvania State University, 1991–1995
  • Study abroad, European Media — University of Manchester, 1993
  • Study abroad, Politics — University of Leeds, 1995

How I found my way back to one-to-one

About five years ago I was burnt out. I was delivering virtually to groups of 25 to 100 people, day after day, and missing the one-to-one connection that made the work worth doing. I felt like I had lost my mojo.

Then I got a call to career-coach undergraduates at Manchester Metropolitan University. Sitting with one person at a time, developing my listening rather than my presenting, something shifted. I became a trusted thinking partner rather than a virtual answer vending machine.

From there I coached leaders at Siemens, and global sales leaders at Reuters on personal impact. My soul felt full.

That’s the work I do now: leadership coaching for people who have outgrown their current box.

Know yourself and focus on your Circle of Control. Self-management and adopting a Growth Mindset in all things that you do unlocks your biggest potential.

The background behind the coaching

Formal portrait of Brian Westley in a suit and tie

Two decades in corporate leadership development — before, and alongside, the coaching practice.

I founded my own practice in 2008, but I was already running leadership and sales development inside GE from 2003 — so the twenty years covers the whole arc, not just the years under my own name.
